Emma`s Diary Baby Photography

Baby Photography....... or in other words.... I never knew I lived in Nappy Valley

I recently had the opportunity to become the Emma`s Diary Baby Photographer for the Mansfield, Newark and Grantham region of the East Midlands. This has meant a flood of enquiries for photographing babies in either my studio in Newark, or out on location at clients homes. Some of the babies are just a few days old, but most are about 3 or 4 months old.

To make life a little easier for the new Mum, I can travel to her home and photograph the baby in a comfortable and familiar environment. Most of the babies are perfectly happy to be photographed with only a few objecting to funny looking bald bloke pointing a camera at them!!

If the Mother is comfortable, I have also been photographing her holding her new baby. I normally try to get them as close as possible to show a the connection between mother and child.

Some Mums are happy to strip down to show their shoulders off for an implied nude effect. This increases the intimacy and closeness of the photograph.

Most of the time I have been simply using the available light in the room and just supplementing it with a little flash bounced of the walls to help fill the shadow areas a little.  This means I am not messing about with large cumbersome flash equipment which can upset a baby.  I am normally in and out of the house in around 40 minutes depending on how comfortable the child is.

If the baby is happy, I will try to get really close to capture the tiny details such as fingers, toes and noses, like in the photograph of Sebastian above.

Little Bows seem to be popular with Mums at the moment....

I am currently photographing babies on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday most weeks. If you would like a photograph of your baby, either in the studio or at your home. Please eel free to give me a call.

Three Generations - when a family gets together

The Parton Family

One of the best parts of my job is meeting people. I often get asked to photograph family get together to commemorate a significant birthday or anniversary, or even just to mark the arrival of a new member to a family. On this occasion I had been asked by my friend David to photograph his newest Grandchildren, Ruby and Archie, who after a sticky start were doing really well and developing into two wonderful little babies.

We started with some classic photographs of the two babies on white towels in their Grandparents bedroom. The bedroom had huge North-facing windows that drenched the whole room in soft afternoon light. A simple reflector to push a little light into the shadow side was all that was needed to light the babies - no flash needed at all today.

As we left the room I noticed David cradling his Grandson just in the doorway to the bedroom. The light from the corridor was creating a lovely soft hairlight, so I asked David to stand in the doorway for a moment and hold the pose. Two frames later I had this photograph.

Later we moved into a shadey area in the back garden. The sun was very strong but there was just enough shade to photograph  the three generations of the family together, including Toby who is the twins older brother.

Toby is a lively and happy boy who`s smile lit up whenever his Grandfather spoke to him. He behaved impecably while I was photographing the babies, so I thought I should spend a little time alone with him, so he didn`t start to feel left out. A few photographs of him climbing an apple tree, followed by a simple portrait of him sat on an old bench made for a great collection of simple images of a boy making his a start in life.
