Portia`s Portrait Session
17 June 2009
This morning I had the pleasure of photographing a young lady from Nottingham called Portia. Portia originally came to me a few months ago and asked me if I would sponsor her as she was a finalist in the Mss Teen UK beauty competition.
Today Portia came to see me to get some new photographs to help her update her model portfolio. We spent around an hour in the studio, shooting mostly tight head shots, followed by about 20 minutes on location shooting some full length fashion shots, before the heavens opened up and we had to break for cover. Luckily we had just about achieved everything we originally set out to do.
Cherish The Dress Session
16 June 2009
So the big wedding day is over, all the excitement has died down and you are returning back to normal life again. You are starting to pack everything away into bags and boxes so they can be put into storage, or even given away to charity shops or sold on ebay when you realise that this might actually be the last time you see your beloved wedding dress for a very long time, or even for ever.
The photographs from the Wedding Day serve as a permanent reminder of the big day, but most little girls actually have dreamt about wearing their wedding dress for a very long time and the thought of getting rid of it can be a very difficult decision to make..... so why not wear it one more time?
Before the dress gets put away, book a Cherish the Dress session(as opposed to the Trash the Dress session) and have a beautiful portrait taken in your own time, away from the hustle and bustle of the wedding and crowds of onlookers.... just you and the dress......
Paul and Laura at the Park House Hotel in Shifnal
15 June 2009
Sometimes Photographers get asked to do favours for friends, and this wedding was just one of those times. I have known Paul on and off for a few years now,(we used to work at the same place) but we had not spoken to each other in quite a while, when out of the blue I got a call, it sort of went like this..." Hi Paul, how are you doing? I dont suppose you fancy going to a wedding do you?" .... these calls often start like this and they normally end with, " I dont suppose you could bring your camera...". On this occasion though Paul asked me outright, how much I charged for a wedding and if I was free on the 13th.... It just so happened I was and of course I cut him a deal, but only because Paul is a real genuine bloke, and he agreed to let me play a little....
Paul and Laura tie the knot in the Park House Hotel in Shifnal, Shropshire. The room was lovely and flooded with soft diffused light coming from large windows at the front of the hotel, and a huge roof light over the centre of the room.
The weather was extremely warm with bright almost cloudless sky`s, so I was struggling to find some comfortable shade to shoot some portraits. The only place I really liked was by a huge ivy covered wall which proved perfect for some portraits of the principal guests.
As with any Best Mans speech the Groom normally finds something embarrasing....... Sorry Paul, at least I didn`t post the photo of Toddy holding up that photo of you!!!
Lighting the dancefloor proved a little tricky, but eventually I settled on two lights, each placed at about 45 degrees to the dancefloor opposite the DJ`s lighting rig. I deliberately wanted to shoot into those lights so that they created some sharp cross lighting that made the subjects stand out. Using flash like this also gives me the advantage of being able to freeze motion quite easily. The brief burst of flash stops even little girls in their stride.
This image of Jasmine(the assistant I never knew I had!!) shows her flying through the air at full tilt, yet she is frozen mid stride.
Anyway, guys, it was good to see you again after such a long time. Hope you really enjoy your honeymoon...
Model Portfolios
11 June 2009
Today I had the pleasure of photographing Rachael, an aspiring model from Kirkby-in-Ashfield who wanted to get some more photographs for her portfolio.
Rachael has not been modeling long, but has already gained a considerable level of confidence in front of the camera. She has great skin which needed little work in Photoshop and the brightest eyes I have seen in a very long time.
Rachael was with me for about an hour or so, and made 3 or 4 wardrobe changes. We concentrated on simple headshots, using a very simple rig. For most of the photographs I used a 15 inch beauty dish and a lastolite triflector to wrap racheal in a sharp bright light, but in the shot above I simply turned the dish into the ceiling directly behind my head and dropped the output on the Bowens 125 studio head to its minimum setting. This allowed me to open up the aperture to f2 so only Rachaels eyes are sharp.
How Cute Is This Dog?
07 June 2009
Shankley, the baby of the family I photographed today. Only a year old and already stealing hearts....... I quite often photograph pets, as most families see them as members of the family. This little monkey was in and out of everything while we were trying to shoot the family portraits, he was jumping all over the furniture and peoples laps and generally making everyone laugh while we were sheltering the conservatory during a horrendous rainstorm. We were lucky not to get muddy paws all over everyones clothes, but thankfully, apart from a slight accident on the living room carpet, all went well.

Since the weather was so bad, we all stayed indoors(apart fromShankley who ended up getting booted outside for a while to cool down) the conservatory was quite bright, so I just used a little flash, bounced of the frosted glass ceiling, to lift the exposure a little so I didn`t loose detail in the shadows. As usual I kept it simple with an old Vivitar 285, triggered with a Pocket Wizard, I had my Canon 580`s and my Lumedynes with me, but in the end we were tight on space so I just left it at the one light and big bag of dog biscuits.....
Rock Band Promo Shoot
03 June 2009
Just a quick post to show off a few portraits from last nights shoot with local band Machine God. I have worked with a couple of these guys before when they were in another band and it was good to get a call from them again to work with them on their new project.
We spent a few minutes in the studio taking some very simple head shots against a dark grey background, which I darkened in post processing. I ran the images through Nik Software`s Silver Efex Pro to create the black and white tones and darkened the edges with a heavy vignette.
Simple yet very effective.
Sarah and James Sneek Preview
23 May 2009
Today I had the privilege of photographing Sarah and James`s Wedding at the most beautiful little church in Winkburn near Southwell in Nottinghamshire. The weather was lovely, the Bride was stunning and the Groom wasn`t anywhere nearly as embarrased and shy in front of the camera as I had been led to believe he would be..... well done James...
The gorgeous Bride trying to be coy....
The not-so-shy Groom....
The overjoyed Father of the Bride....
Well done guys, hope you have a wonderful time and I hope you enjoyed the photos.....
